How to install GNU GCC 8 on CentOS 7

It has been long after releasing the GNU GCC 8.x, but at last, there is a trusted repository, which has offered us packages for GNU GCC 8.x, which won’t break your system! Many of us prefer CentOS 7 because it offers free enterprise-class operating system and as mentioned in our article before – How to install new gcc and development tools under CentOS 7 there are a couple of approved external repositories for CentOS, which you can trust https://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories. In one of them Software Collection – https://www.softwarecollections.org/en/scls/ several months ago the GNU GCC 8.x packages were added!
At present, the GNU GCC version is gcc (GCC) 8.3.1 20190311 (Red Hat 8.3.1-3).
Here are the steps how you can install GNU GCC 8 and how you can use it:

STEP 1) Update your system and install the repository in your system

The commands:

yum update -y
yum -y install centos-release-scl

Gentoo building qtgui error – g++-v8/cstdlib:75:15: fatal error: stdlib.h: No such file or directory

Most cases this error happens after you updated the GNU GCC (this update triggers the error, but it might be not the problem)! This was the case with us we updated the GNU GCC and then wanted to update QT libraries and several packages were built OK, but then this error occurred when compiling dev-qt/qtgui.

Gentoo update tips when updating packages with blocks and masked files

It’s not so rear to have

blocks or masked files

when using Gentoo emerge system, but it is not complex and in most cases it is easy to resolve

To summarize it up at the beginning and then we are going to show you other articles using these advises here where you’ll see what are the steps we took to resolve the conflicts and masked packages:

  • Use verbose,verbose-conflicts and backtrack with emerge
  • Remove only big GUI packages, which have really big dependency graph like office suites or development IDEs
  • Remove obsolete packages – you do not need them, they can just make problems when updating, because emerge will take into consideration their requirements and dependencies and your update could be impossible!
  • Do not update everything with one line, you could update only the base libraries like QT, which are very important for the Linux GUI in general
  • Include explicitly packages, which block our updates in the emerge line! You could specify packages with the versions.
  • use tools like “equery” (part of app-portage/gentoolkit) for checking dependencies and/or which packages depend on the queried package. You can use it with specific version for the package. “qlist” (part of app-portage/portage-utils) also is a handful tool.
  • Sometimes when updating a group or a package with big dependency graph it is much easier to drop the -“u” update argument and to rebuild some packages with the updates.
  • In rear cases you can use “–nodeps” when updating or installing a new package (we do not need and show this one here!)
  • Do NOT rebuild the entire system with “emerge -v world” every time when you rebuild glibc, gcc, it is not mandatory to do it to have a healthy system.
  • Add or remove USE flags if needed – emerge will show you information about it. Use package.use, package.mask, package.unmask and so on.
  • use qlist to update/re(build) to pull currently installed packages with some name or category (categories)
    emerge -v $(qlist -IC|grep <NAME>)

and for update just add “u” to “-v”:

    emerge -vu $(qlist -IC|grep <NAME>)

How to install new gcc and development tools under CentOS 7

CentOS 7 is a very stable and conservative operating system. It offers us free enterprise-class operating system, which is compatible with Red Hat, but in many situations, we need a newer (not even a bleeding edge) tools from a trusted source not from an unknown third repository! Let’s say you are a developer and you need newer than GCC 4.8 (which is more than 5 years old and at present, we have stable GCC 8.x stable branch). There are repositories, which would surely break your system at one point even they do not break it at first installing a newer version of GNU GCC! There is a really easy and “official” way to have newer development software in CentOS 7 by using the Software Collection – https://www.softwarecollections.org/en/scls/
We can say these packages are officially maintained by CentOS 7 team and as a whole Red Hat/CentOS officials and community developers! The collection aims at

  1. Multiple version installed of the same components, you can have multiple GNU GCC installed without breaking your system or compiling manually. Not only GNU GCC, but you can also have PHP, Ruby, Python, famous databases like Mysql, MongoDB, PostgreSQL and many more
  2. To have a newer version of the same components, you can have multiple version of GNU GCC – you can install with no worries of breaking your system GNU GCC 6 and 7

This article is to install GNU GCC 7 on CentOS 7 and we have a new one to install GNU GCC 8How to install GNU GCC 8 on CentOS 7.

So here is how to install GNU GCC 7:

STEP 1) Install the repository in your system

yum install centos-release-scl

Here is the output in our system:

STEP 3) Use the installed tools.

Because using such a package with multiple complex packages you must configure multiple environment and links to the versions you installed replacing the ones from your base system, but the package comes with a handy tool, which executing it will configure everything and you are ready to go!

scl enable devtoolset-7 bash

And you’ll be in a bash environment, which is configured for GNU GCC 7.

[srv@local ~]# scl enable devtoolset-7 bash
[srv@local ~]# which gcc
/opt/rh/devtoolset-7/root/usr/bin/gcc
[srv@local ~]# gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 7.3.1 20180303 (Red Hat 7.3.1-5)
Copyright (C) 2017 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO
warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

[root@srv ~]#

As long as you are in this bash shell (you do not type exit) your environment is configured to use GNU GCC 7 and you can use make, cmake to compile your projects with this newer version.

Before entering the devtoolset-7 bash shell, here is the error for the GNU GCC version:

[srv@local build]# cmake3 ../

CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:29 (message):
g++ version must be at least 5.1!

-- Configuring incomplete, errors occurred!
See also "/root/myproject/build/CMakeFiles/CMakeOutput.log".

After entering the devtoolset-7 bash shell, everything is configured OK and you can proceed with the “make”:
